Summary

A visionary and powerful debut thriller set in a terrifyingly plausible dystopian near-future--with clear parallels to today's headlines--in which the future of humanity lies in the hands of one woman, a scientist who has stumbled upon a secret that the government will go to any lengths to keep hidden。

The world has stopped turning。 The hunt has just begun。

It is 2059, and the world has crashed。 Forty years ago, a solar catastrophe began to slow the planet's rotation to a stop。 Now one half of the globe is permanently sunlit, the other half trapped in an endless night。 The United States has colonized the southern half of Great Britain--lucky enough to find itself in the narrow habitable region left between frozen darkness and scorching sunlight--where both nations have managed to survive the ensuing chaos by isolating themselves from the rest of the world。

Ellen Hopper is a scientist living on a frostbitten rig in the cold Atlantic。 She wants nothing more to do with her country after its slide into casual violence and brutal authoritarianism。 Yet when two government officials arrive, demanding she return to London to see her dying college mentor, she accepts--and begins to unravel a secret that threatens not only the nation's fragile balance, but the future of the whole human race。

I enjoyed this book and recommended it under the Amazon 99p deals read to friends。 I do think it strange that some parts of life still kept going ie universities etc without too much impact eg look what happened at the start of the pandemic, and agree with others that the characters were a little flat, but I did get absorbed and suspended disbelief so it's a book I'll keep。 I also really like the author's style of writing and loved that it was based in UK with familiar landmarks so 4 stars。 I enjoyed this book and recommended it under the Amazon 99p deals read to friends。 I do think it strange that some parts of life still kept going ie universities etc without too much impact eg look what happened at the start of the pandemic, and agree with others that the characters were a little flat, but I did get absorbed and suspended disbelief so it's a book I'll keep。 I also really like the author's style of writing and loved that it was based in UK with familiar landmarks so 4 stars。 。。。more

I stopped reading this。 It was far fetched and implausible。 I was bored and frustrated by it。

A quite interesting idea to start with, but somehow I didn't feel attached to this book。 It felt a bit like a treasure hunt, jumping from one place to another and finding clues。 The motives of some characters where not clear to me and I missed some more details。 A quite interesting idea to start with, but somehow I didn't feel attached to this book。 It felt a bit like a treasure hunt, jumping from one place to another and finding clues。 The motives of some characters where not clear to me and I missed some more details。 。。。more

This bleak yet sanguine dystopian science fiction attempts to cover a lot of ground in very few pages。 The ideas in this book are interesting and the plot is engaging in spite of the relatively slow pace。tI get the feeling this book was very well thought out, but for reasons of book size and readability not everything made it into the final cut。 I like long books and I would have been happy to spend the pages to learn more about the post-stop world。 AHM has obviously spent a lot of time dwelling This bleak yet sanguine dystopian science fiction attempts to cover a lot of ground in very few pages。 The ideas in this book are interesting and the plot is engaging in spite of the relatively slow pace。tI get the feeling this book was very well thought out, but for reasons of book size and readability not everything made it into the final cut。 I like long books and I would have been happy to spend the pages to learn more about the post-stop world。 AHM has obviously spent a lot of time dwelling on the details and I wish we had gotten to read more of them。tI felt like there were some elements of the story that weren’t adequately explained while there were others that had to be shoe-horned in so that the plot would make sense。 For example, why is everyone smoking? I felt like this was to build a war-era aesthetic, but where are they getting all this tobacco from if they can’t even get enough food for everyone? I really thought that would come up at some point。 It bugged me every time someone took out a cigarette (so, every other page)。 tI also felt like the characters didn’t act very rationally。 The seemed to stumble around in the story and move the plot forward by falling face first into the big reveal。 There were many points in the story I thought one of the characters was about to make a bold or exciting move and they just kind of bumped into a wall and staggered off in a different direction like a clockwork toy。tThat’s not to say the characters didn’t have substance - I thought they were very well rounded and believable - they just didn’t get to do enough for me to really get behind them。 Overall, a fun read that doesn’t quite live up to it’s potential。 。。。more

3 stars is probably a bit harsh because I did enjoy this book and I would recommend anyone to read it。 It’s a great story that moves at a decent pace that is hard to put down。 So why only 3 stars? I just feel given a few days I will have forgotten most of it。 It’s just not a book that will stay with you。 But don’t let that put you off as it is a really enjoyable read at the time。

Its along while since I read a book of this genre and it looks like I will have to wait until 2022 for what I hope is the next instalment。 Ellie and David exploring how the rest of the world is surviving after the Slow and the Stop。

The Last Day is a great read。 The story is well written and the concept is very original。 It was great to read a science fiction apocalyptic story that had a decent foundation。 I loved the mystery of the book and time after time I was persuaded to read just one more chapter。 I must say that I was a little disappointed with the ending of the book。 Although it fit the story well, I experienced it as a bit of an anticlimax and found that the characters had little to do with the outcome of the story The Last Day is a great read。 The story is well written and the concept is very original。 It was great to read a science fiction apocalyptic story that had a decent foundation。 I loved the mystery of the book and time after time I was persuaded to read just one more chapter。 I must say that I was a little disappointed with the ending of the book。 Although it fit the story well, I experienced it as a bit of an anticlimax and found that the characters had little to do with the outcome of the story。 。。。more

A gripping book about a post apocalyptic world after the Earths rotation stalls。 Fast moving and exciting story of a scientist who discovers a terrible truth about the governments plans for world domination and struggle to prevent this happening whilst beings pursued by the security services, great read。

This immersive page-turner has been one of the delights of the year。 Coming from the unlikely source of one of QI's elves its central conceit of a civilisation hurtling towards collapse as the Earth has stopped turning leaving only a thin habitable region is original and leads to a book that is thrilling and immersive。 You simply won't want to stop reading。 This immersive page-turner has been one of the delights of the year。 Coming from the unlikely source of one of QI's elves its central conceit of a civilisation hurtling towards collapse as the Earth has stopped turning leaving only a thin habitable region is original and leads to a book that is thrilling and immersive。 You simply won't want to stop reading。 。。。more

A superb premise for a book, however, The author has no idea how to end it

A well written, enjoyable mystery thriller。 Not what I expected, in a good way。 I expected yet another dystopian story hung on the hook of ‘the world stopped rotating’。 Instead, the world stopped rotating is simply the backdrop to a rather good mystery thriller, which I enjoyed tremendously。

So, firstly the science that I didn’t understand。 The Earth has stopped rotating and most of the planet is either too hot or too cold to live in。 A narrow strip of permanent 24 hour weak sun includes Great Britain。The U。K。 has become a dystopian dictatorship, using the need to survive to implement utter control over the media, use of worker camps and the ability to disappear anyone that disagrees。Ellen Hopper is a scientist, working on an oil rig measuring tide flow。 A dying request from her old So, firstly the science that I didn’t understand。 The Earth has stopped rotating and most of the planet is either too hot or too cold to live in。 A narrow strip of permanent 24 hour weak sun includes Great Britain。The U。K。 has become a dystopian dictatorship, using the need to survive to implement utter control over the media, use of worker camps and the ability to disappear anyone that disagrees。Ellen Hopper is a scientist, working on an oil rig measuring tide flow。 A dying request from her old University mentor brings her back to England where finding the truth is not encouraged。 Despite the dangers she follows clues through a very different London and Oxford。 Something is hidden but what, and where, is it?This is an easy read but a clever premise is not really built on。 Ellen seems to do a number of stupid things without really thinking and just skips through the supposedly tightly controlled London。 Half the time it feels like a solid post apocalyptic vision but then drops to Young Adult simplicity of plot。Not bad but could easily have been exceptional。 。。。more

This book took a while for me to get into but mainly because it is set in a future Britain and it just takes a while to adjust to the setting but once you’ve found your feet this is quite a book。 This is a proper gripping futuristic thriller with plenty of high energy chases through a very different London as Ellen Hopper tries to get to the truth having been left a cryptic message from her old professor before he dies。

An excellent debut!!

This book was very different to what I usually read but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised。 It was very well written and easy to understand generally。 The plot was interesting and the twists were very well constructed。 I liked the whole lot and would definitely recommend anyone to read this。

Zero stars。 This is the most pointless and boring book I’ve read in a long time。 Random threat and violence inserted in an attempt the create jeopardy, which just wasn’t believable。 For most of the book the main character didn’t even know what she was looking for, or whether finding it would be a good or bad thing, but she risked the lives of others to keep looking anyway。 Poorly written, boring story, characters that didn’t warrant any interest in their actions。 Dull from beginning to end。

Good read Very good read。 Will keep you turning the pages。 Original story very well written。 Look forward to reading more from this author。

DNFJust couldn't get through this and I really did try。 Lasted about 50% before finally deciding this book had put me in a major ready slump。 Might try and pick this book up at a later date but for now it's just another pile of supermarket crappy literature。 DNFJust couldn't get through this and I really did try。 Lasted about 50% before finally deciding this book had put me in a major ready slump。 Might try and pick this book up at a later date but for now it's just another pile of supermarket crappy literature。 。。。more

Really enjoyable read - loved the characters and the storyline 。 A little sobering and aspects of this resonate with our times - Brexit - pandemic - international relations etc

Loved it。

This book really makes you think about our reliance on technology, our trust in governments and global warming。 A gripping suspense aswell。 Highly recommended

It's a nice dystopian story。 Started a bit slow but later on it paced up。 Some interesting thoughts about mankind and it's egoism/nationalism。 Looking forward to more books written by the author。 It's a nice dystopian story。 Started a bit slow but later on it paced up。 Some interesting thoughts about mankind and it's egoism/nationalism。 Looking forward to more books written by the author。 。。。more

Enjoying books recently where there is a cataclysmic event, not sure if it helps me make sense of the last year and how life can suddenly change。 The main character is likeable and the book is one of those you read at every possible opportunity

Engaging enough, but too many moments where the protagonist spots something that the experts failed to find!!! Big brother pretty ineffective given a Police State。 No real conclusion either

Reading the reviews of this book it seems one of those you either like or dislike- personally I really enjoyed it。 It was well written and had an unusual take on a dystopian scenario。 As if 2020 wasn’t bad enough the planet starts slowing until eventually stopping, leaving Britain in a habitable slice of the world although a largely police state and one where there is hardly anyone you can trust。 I thought this was a very good debut with a strong female lead character in Ellen, whose search for Reading the reviews of this book it seems one of those you either like or dislike- personally I really enjoyed it。 It was well written and had an unusual take on a dystopian scenario。 As if 2020 wasn’t bad enough the planet starts slowing until eventually stopping, leaving Britain in a habitable slice of the world although a largely police state and one where there is hardly anyone you can trust。 I thought this was a very good debut with a strong female lead character in Ellen, whose search for a secret makes this a real page turner。 。。。more

Fascinating concept, with well-researched science to back it up。 I was constantly surprised by the twists near the end。 Excellent!
